Extint, Araucarioxylon arizonicum is an extinct species of primitive conifer and is the official and representative fossil and state of Arizona. The petrified wood of this tree is popularly known as "rainbow wood" for the full range of colors in which some specimens of these trunks have been preserved giving them a unique and extraordinary beauty. In the process of fossilization and mineralization with the presence of Oligisto, Hematite, Ferric Oxide, Silice, Iron Sulfide, Manganese, Native Iron, Goethite and very fine spherules (microscopic particles) of hematite distributed in the quartz matrix, the capricious nature has given us incredible and unique pieces very sought after by collectors. In the Triassic period Arizona was a flat tropical extension in the northwest corner of the Pangea supercontinent. In that habitat a forest grew in which A. arizonicum rose to 60 meters (200 feet). This species and presumed distant relative of Araucaria reached an estimated maximum height of almost 61 meters with a diameter of 60 centimeters. A. arizonicum may be composed of several different genera and species. Studies of the past decade carried out by F.H. Knowlton reveal that there may be three species that were provisionally reclassified as Pullisilvaxylon arizonicum, Pullisilvaxylon daughertii and Chinleoxylon knowltonii. The genus Araucarioxylon can be non-definitive and illegitimate; and the petrified trunks of the Petrified Forest National Park may be composed of a greater diversity than was originally believed.
